APRIL 12, 2010 John Welsman and co-writer Cherie Camp won the Genie Award tonight for Best Original Song for 'Oh, Love', featured in the film 'NURSE.FIGHTER.BOY'! The lead vocals of this beautiful piece were by Toronto's own Zaki Ibrahim, and it provides the focal point for one of my favourite sequences. Though the night belonged mostly to the Quebec film 'Polytechnique', it was wonderful to be back together with the cast/key creatives, and I was very proud to cheer for the film.
'NURSE.FIGHTER.BOY' has been nominated for TEN Genie Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay! I had the pleasure to attend the press conference and, needless to say, we were all thrilled to see the film receive such generous recognition. The awards ceremony will be held in Toronto on April 12th, 2010.

'NURSE.FIGHTER.BOY' played a three-week theatrical run in Toronto and received positive media coverage. The Globe & Mail's film critic Liam Lacey gave it 3 out of 4 stars, and said it delivered 'Melting montages & emotional punch'. The film also received ACTRA Award nominations for all three principal actors, which apparently was a first for a Canadian feature. Mongrel Media will be releasing the film in Canada on DVD in June, so look for it at your favourite rental store.

I'm pleased to announce that I have been chosen to cut writer/director Sook-Yin Lee's debut feature comedy 'YEAR OF THE CARNIVORE'. The film stars newcomer Cristin Milioti and Mark Rendall (Victoria Day, Charlie Bartlett) in a bittersweet coming-of-age story about a girl with an unrequited crush on a boy who thinks she's bad in bed, so she sets out to get more "experience". Sook-Yin Lee is a multi-talented writer, actor and director and I'm thrilled to be part of her team. Produced by Screen Siren Pictures and The Film Farm, editing will commence alongside principal photography in Vancouver, with picture lock in Toronto slated for early spring 2009.
